Questions / 07

The things people ask first.

Straight answers on editions, hardware fit, regional supply and licensing scope before an order is placed.

  • 01

Standard or Datacenter — which do I need?

Standard is commonly used for physical or lightly virtualised hosts; Datacenter is intended for highly virtualised and software-defined deployments. Virtualisation rights apply only after all physical cores on the server are correctly licensed, so the edition, core count and deployment are checked together.
  • 02

Will ROK activate on a Dell or Lenovo server?

No. ROK is BIOS-locked to HPE hardware. If you need licences for non-HPE servers, ask about standard Microsoft volume licensing.
  • 03

Do you supply Windows Server 2022 and 2025 HPE ROK?

Yes. Availability varies by edition, core pack and regional suffix. We check the HPE SKU and lead time against the ProLiant deployment before you order.
  • 04

How do regional HPE ROK SKU suffixes work?

HPE ROK part numbers vary by region. The UK and EU are our core markets; Americas SKUs are available on request. Send the server location and deployment country, and we will check the suffix before quoting.
  • 05

Do I need Windows Server CALs with HPE ROK?

For Windows Server Standard and Datacenter, users or devices accessing the server normally need Windows Server CALs. Remote Desktop Services requires separate RDS CALs if you use RDS. CALs are quoted separately from the HPE ROK server licence unless stated otherwise.
  • 06

How many cores do I need to license?

Windows Server Standard and Datacenter are licensed by physical cores, with a minimum of 16 core licences per server and 8 core licences per physical processor. If the server has more physical cores than the minimum, we quote the additional core packs needed for that host.
  • 07

Should I choose Standard or Datacenter?

Standard is usually the first check for low-density or non-virtualised servers. Datacenter is usually considered when the host is heavily virtualised because it includes broader virtualisation rights. The right answer depends on physical cores, processor count and VM count.
