    Standard or Datacenter — which Dell ROK edition do I need?

    Choose Standard for physical servers and lower-density virtualisation. Choose Datacenter where unlimited Windows Server virtual machine rights matter. Both are licensed by physical core and must cover every core in the PowerEdge host.

    How does Dell ROK differ from standalone Windows Server?

    Dell ROK is an OEM licence supplied through Dell's channel — it is OEM-locked to Dell PowerEdge hardware. Standalone licences from the Microsoft page are not hardware-locked and can move between servers.

    Will Dell ROK work on an HPE ProLiant or Lenovo ThinkSystem?

    No. Dell ROK is OEM-locked to Dell PowerEdge hardware. For HPE ProLiant use the HPE ROK page; for Lenovo ThinkSystem see the Lenovo ROK page.

    Do CALs come with a Dell Windows Server licence?

    No. Windows Server User or Device CALs are separate from the base server licence. Tell us how people and devices access the server and we will match the CAL generation and quantity.

    What is the difference between a Windows Server CAL and an RDS CAL?

    A Windows Server CAL covers ordinary access to Windows Server. An RDS CAL is an additional licence for a user or device opening a Remote Desktop Services session. RDS access normally needs both layers.
