HPE ProLiant — straight answers
Configuring an HPE ProLiant server — FAQ
Sourced from HPE QuickSpecs (a50004306 DL360, a50004307 DL380, a50004302 DDR5 Smart Memory) — the same rules the builder enforces.
- What is the maximum RAM on an HPE DL380 Gen11 with a 24SFF chassis?
- 4.0TB — 16 DIMMs of 256GB. The 24SFF chassis caps the DL380 Gen11 at 16 DIMM slots, not the platform's full 32, per HPE QuickSpecs a50004307. The 8SFF/16SFF chassis allows the full 32 DIMMs and 8.0TB.
- What cooling does a 350W CPU need in an HPE DL360 Gen11?
- Closed-loop liquid cooling or a DLC module. Any processor above 270W TDP (271–350W) on the DL360 Gen11 requires liquid cooling per HPE QuickSpecs a50004306. 186–270W needs a Performance Heatsink plus Performance Fan; 185W and under uses a Standard Heatsink (P48904-B21).
- Can you mix 4th and 5th Gen Intel Xeon in a Gen11 server?
- No — 4th and 5th Gen Xeon cannot be mixed; the board ships per generation and is not field-upgradable between generations (a50004307).
- How many DIMMs can an HPE DL360 Gen11 take with one CPU?
- 16. DIMMs install only where a processor is present, so one CPU exposes only half the 32 slots; add a second CPU for the full 32 (HPE QuickSpecs a50004306). Qualified per-socket counts are 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16.
- What DDR5 memory do the HPE DL360 and DL380 Gen11 use?
- DDR5 RDIMM only — 16 slots per CPU across 8 channels, up to 8.0TB total (HPE QuickSpecs a50004306 / a50004307), with 256GB DIMMs at 4800 or 5600 MT/s capped by the processor (HPE DDR5 Smart Memory QuickSpecs a50004302). LRDIMM is not offered on these platforms.
- Are the parts genuine, and how is pricing shown?
- Every component is genuine HPE on the OEM route, with no grey-market stock. The builder shows list prices only; trade pricing is on request, GBP ex VAT, with 4-hour response.
HPE DL385 Gen11 — straight answers
HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen11 (AMD EPYC) — FAQ
Sourced from HPE QuickSpecs a50004300enw (and a50004302 DDR5 Smart Memory) — the same rules the builder enforces.
- What is the maximum RAM on an HPE DL385 Gen11?
- 6.0TB — 24 DIMMs of 256GB. The DL385 Gen11 has 24 DIMM slots: 12 channels per CPU at 1 DIMM per channel (HPE QuickSpecs a50004300enw). It takes DDR5 RDIMM only — no LRDIMM, no Persistent Memory.
- What cooling does the HPE DL385 Gen11 need by CPU wattage?
- Cooling steps up in three tiers by TDP. A Standard heatsink covers up to 240W, Performance 241–300W, and Max-Performance above 300W (HPE QuickSpecs a50004300enw). Above 300W also blocks the mid drive cage.
- Can you mix processor models in an HPE DL385 Gen11?
- No — both sockets must run the same processor model. 4th Gen EPYC (4800 MT/s) and 5th Gen (6400 MT/s) are different platforms, not mixable (HPE QuickSpecs a50004300enw).
- How fast does DDR5 run in an HPE DL385 Gen11?
- It depends on the processor generation. 4th Gen EPYC runs DIMMs at 4800 MT/s, 5th Gen at 6400 MT/s (HPE QuickSpecs a50004300enw; a50004302). Effective speed is the lower of the DIMM rating and the CPU's supported speed.
HPE DL320 Gen11 — straight answers
HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 (single-socket) — FAQ
Sourced from HPE QuickSpecs a50004315enw (and a50004302 DDR5 Smart Memory) — the same rules the builder enforces.
- Does the HPE DL320 Gen11 leave half its DIMM slots empty until you add a second CPU?
- No — all 16 DIMM slots are live with its single processor. The DL320 Gen11 is single-socket, so the 'half the slots until a second CPU' rule never applies (HPE QuickSpecs a50004315enw). That rule is for the dual-socket DL360, DL380 and DL385.
- What is the maximum RAM on an HPE DL320 Gen11?
- 1.5TB — 16 DIMMs of 96GB, the largest orderable RDIMM. The DL320 Gen11 has 16 DIMM slots across 8 channels at 2 DIMMs per channel (HPE QuickSpecs a50004315enw). It runs DDR5 RDIMM only.
- How fast does DDR5 run in an HPE DL320 Gen11?
- Up to 5200 MT/s in practice, capped by the processor. 5th Gen DIMM SKUs are rated 5600, 4th Gen 4800, at one per channel. Both drop to 4400 at two per channel (HPE QuickSpecs a50004315enw; a50004302). No DL320 CPU exceeds 5200, and 4800 and 5600 modules can't be mixed.
- What cooling does the HPE DL320 Gen11 need?
- One threshold, not a ladder. Up to 185W uses a Standard heatsink and fan; above 185W needs the High-Performance pair (HPE QuickSpecs a50004315enw). A GPU CTO chassis always needs the Performance heatsink. 96GB DIMMs need the High-Performance fan kit.
