Will DDR5 fit my server? How to check server memory compatibility

DDR5 only fits a DDR5-capable platform — it will not go in a DDR4 slot. The module type and maximum size depend on your server. Here is how to check before you buy.

Will DDR5 fit my server?

Only if the server is DDR5-capable. DDR5 will not go into a DDR4 slot — the keying, voltage and signalling are different, so the module physically will not seat. The first question is always the platform, not the module.

Three things decide whether a given DDR5 module fits: the platform generation, the module type (RDIMM or LRDIMM), and the maximum module size your server supports.

Which servers take DDR5?

DDR5 needs a DDR5-capable memory controller, which is fixed per server generation. Current DDR5 generations include Dell PowerEdge 16th Gen, Lenovo ThinkSystem V3 and HPE ProLiant Gen11. Earlier generations are DDR4 and cannot be upgraded to DDR5 without replacing the server.

Not sure which generation you have? Use our free DDR5 compatibility checker to find modules that fit your exact model.

RDIMM or LRDIMM — will either fit?

Both are DDR5 and use the same slot, so both fit physically. But the server must support the type, and you cannot mix RDIMM and LRDIMM in the same machine. RDIMM is the right default for almost every server; LRDIMM is for the largest-capacity builds where the platform lists it. We cover the difference in RDIMM vs LRDIMM.

What is the biggest module my server takes?

It depends on the platform, the CPU fitted and the firmware — there is no universal DDR5 capacity ceiling, and the numbers move with each generation. Do not assume a fixed maximum. Check the server’s memory QVL or datasheet, or run the model through the compatibility checker.

Can I mix speeds or capacities?

You can install mixed speeds, but every module clocks down to the slowest one. Order matched kits where you can. Mixing capacities is more fiddly and platform-dependent — confirm against the server’s memory population rules before you buy.

Send us your server model and the capacity you need. We will confirm exactly what fits and quote it the same day.

The bottom line: DDR5 fits only a DDR5-capable platform, in the module type your server supports, up to the maximum size that platform allows. Check the model before you order.

Common questions

Can I put DDR5 in a DDR4 server?
No. DDR5 needs DDR5 slots — the keying, voltage and signalling are different and the module will not fit. The platform itself must be DDR5-capable.
How do I find the maximum module size my server takes?
It varies by platform, CPU and firmware — there is no universal ceiling. Check the server's memory QVL or datasheet, or use our compatibility checker.
Can I mix RDIMM and LRDIMM?
No. All modules in a server must be the same type. RDIMM is the right default for almost every server.
What if I mix DDR5 speeds?
All modules run at the speed of the slowest one installed. It works, but you lose the benefit of the faster modules. Match kits where you can.
