What is DDR5 ECC memory?
DDR5 ECC memory is enterprise-grade server RAM that includes Error Correcting Code (ECC) technology. ECC automatically detects and corrects memory errors, helping prevent data corruption and system crashes. DDR5 also provides higher bandwidth and improved power efficiency compared to DDR4, making it ideal for virtualisation, databases, AI workloads and business-critical servers.
Is DDR5 compatible with DDR4 servers?
No. DDR5 is not physically or electrically compatible with DDR4 servers. DDR5 uses a different pin layout, voltage design and memory controller architecture. A server must specifically support DDR5 memory (typically newer generation platforms such as Intel Sapphire Rapids or AMD EPYC Genoa).
What speed DDR5 should I choose?
The most common and widely supported enterprise speed is DDR5-5600 MT/s. It offers an excellent balance of performance, stability and cost.
DDR5-4800 is often used as a baseline configuration, while DDR5-6400 is available on some newer platforms but may not run at full speed if all memory slots are populated. Always check your server model’s supported maximum speed before purchasing.
